GroundSwell's final concert of the season
curated by Diana McIntosh
Winnipeg Art Gallery
8:00 pm, Thursday - April 20, 2006
In On a Lighter Note Diana McIntosh proves, once again, that not all composers take themselves deadly seriously all the time. This concert exposes the lighter side of new music. Featured will be several playful ensemble works by PDQ Bach, claimed to be theyoungest son of JS Bach, Manitoba premieres of music by Texas composer Dan Welcher, and a collaborative theatrical work by Beverley Johnston and Diana McIntosh. Diana will also perform her ... and 8:30 in Newfoundland, a quintessential McIntosh work. Also on the program is a new work - Calamity Jane - for piano and percussion by Calgary composer Quenten Doolittle. Joining pianist Diana McIntosh will be some of Winnipeg’s finest musicians:
Martha Durkin, piccolo
Bill Bonness, english horn,
Pat Daniels, Bb clarinet and bass clarinet
Vincent Ellin, bassoon and contra bassoon
Richard Turner, harp
Earl Stafford, conductor and piano
and
Toronto percussionist Beverley Johnston.

One
of McIntosh's most popular theatrical musical works, her
satirical Eliptosonics,
is
a send-up of avant-garde program notes. Amy Duncan, a New York
reviewer, wrote, "Multimedia
performance is a natural outcome of the
age, and McIntosh is one of its important voices. Watch for her."
Diana McIntosh is,
in fact, a mountaineer. She combines music and mountains in a
full-evening
one-woman show Solitary
Climb, in which her audience shares
a daring experience "scaling the sheer face of new music."
