In 1982 Diana McIntosh received the

YWCA Woman of the Year Award for The Arts

This was in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the advancement and enjoyment of contemporary music, over many years.  Upon graduating from the School of Music at the University of Manitoba she taught music appreciation for the University's Continuing Education Dept. for 7 years, and gave special focus to Canadian composers and their music.  In 1977 she, together with Canadian composer Ann Southam, of Toronto, she founded Music Inter Allia, Western Canada's first contemporary music series.  Diana continued it for 14 years, until funding requirements of the Manitoba Arts Council obliged her to join 2 smaller local contemporary music groups - Thira and Iz Music - to become GroundSwell, in which she continues her active role as one of its Artistic Directors.

"Virtuoso composer, pianist, show-woman - Winnipeg's Diana McIntosh - is one of the wonders of the Canadian contemporary music world. Contemporary music is not often so engaging, entertaining and delightful."
The Halifax Chronicle-Herald

In 1985 she was awarded a Major Arts Grant from the Manitoba Arts Council, and a grant from The Canada Council that enabled her
to live in New York for a period of 7 months to immerse herself in the New Music scene there, and to write new works. This
proved
to be a major springboard for her career as both composer and performer. Her outlook was vastly expanded, she met
many
composers and performers, and she gained an enhanced recognition of her own stature in the milieu.
"Multimedia performance is a natural outgrowth of the age, and McIntosh is one of its important voices."
Christian Science Monitor

Diana has performed 8 times in New York, mainly one-woman shows, but also as a guest on the New York New Music series, performing her duo Luminaries, with renowned flutist Patricia Spencer.  That concert was held in the Carnegie Recital Hall.  Diana subsequently presented several one-woman performances in that hall, as well as in Merkin Hall, Symphony Space, and the Knitting Factory.

"An individual but genuinely poetic atmosphere."
New York Times

Important contacts she made in those months in New York, in 1985, led to her bringing a variety of performers she heard there to Winnipeg, to perform in her Music Inter Alia series.  Duo pianists  Cameron Grant and James Winn wowed the Winnipeg audience with their stunning performance of Stockhausen's Mantra.  As co-artistic director of GroundSwell, Diana brought James Winn back to Winnipeg in 2003, along with violinist Rolf Schulte of New York, for a concert of piano and violin duos and solos.  They premiered her Moments Ago.

"Diana McIntosh's sound arsenal."                    "Full of mysterious sounds."
E
ar Magazine (New York)
                          Washington Post

She was awarded a Major Arts Grant by the Manitoba Arts Council in 1990 to create a multi-media one-woman musical work, Solitary Climb (45 minutes), which she has performed many times. The work relates new music performance to mountain climbing, both of which McIntosh does.
